The One Simple Thing That Makes You Super-Productive
by Dmitry Nikolaev. Average Reading Time: about a minute.
We all know that sometimes day passes like a second and sometimes it never ends. Sometimes we super-productive, sometimes we like immobile cactus in the desert. For me this question is closed. If I’m working on something, nothing can stop me. Here is my secret weapon.
All my working days have one common feature: they begin with plan. Usually I don’t write detail plans for the weeks, month, never on year. It’s good to write your life targets on large period of times, but writing to-do lists is useless. I never use software for this (I make a try with RTM11Remember The Milk (RTM) is an web-based task- and time-management service., Stickies2 & others). The only instrument, that allows you to have infinite capabilities for creation is a list of parer with a pencil. Picture embedding, word recognition, natural input – that’s all included by default. Sometimes it feels like an art, but in most of the cases it looks as follows:2Stickies is a Macintosh notetaking application for putting Post-it note-like windows on the screen with short reminders, notes and other clippings.

Fist, I write task in any order. Then I give every task a number to follow one task after another in order. Then I start performing tasks.
It’s so simple, so easy to start day from plan. Just write anything that goes into your mind, number those items, and start!

Yeah, impressive. Guess what: my ToDo software does the same, but I don’t have to rewrite recurring items everyday, I can plan into the future and it syncs with my iOS client, so I can use it when I don’t have pen and paper around.
Pen and paper are fine, but they’re not optimal.
The problem is not in paper & pen absence. It’s about how you start you day. I like to start my day from the clear list. From one side I have my wishes & big life targets. From other – planned todos on this day. But I consciously choose what should appears in today day of my life.
It’s not about to follow what you planned yesterday. It’s about to choose a day you want to live in. And that is the biggest secret of productivity.
